Jury

You must report to the Courtroom located on the second floor of the Madison County Courthouse, 101 S. Range St. Madison, FL.  Before reporting: The Clerk’s office has a telephone message that provides jurors with information about jury service. Court cases often settle between the time summons are mailed and the date jurors are scheduled to report. Please call (850) 973-1500 after 5:00 P.M. the day before the scheduled reporting date to verify if your attendance will be necessary.

Length of Service

Your first day of service is normally limited to jury selection. All juries for trial scheduled during the week are selected on the first day of service, and you will be instructed when to return for trial.

Attire

The dress code for court is general business attire. Casual attire is acceptable. However, you should not wear tank tops, shorts, or flip-flops.

American Disabilities Act (ADA)

If you are a person with a disability who needs any accommodation in order to participate in this proceeding, you are entitled, at no cost to you, to the provision of certain assistance. Please contact 850-973-1500 within two (2) working days of your receipt of this jury summons.

Excusals

Florida laws provides few reasons for excusing persons from jury service. The most significant are:

  1. Expectant mothers and any parent who is employed full time and who has custody of a child under six years of age.
  2. A person who has reported as a prospective juror in Madison County within one (1) year of date to appear for jury duty.
  3. A person 70 years of age or older shall be excused upon request.
  4. A person with health reasons which makes jury service impossible.
  5. Other reasons for excusing jury service may be considered by the court on an individual basis.

For the convenience of jurors, requests for excusal in all cases may be made to the Honorable E. Bailey Browning III, Madison County Judge, provided the request is made before the date of reporting. Requests for excusal should be either in person or by telephoning Judge Browning’s office at (850) 973-6221.

After reporting for jury duty, requests for excusal must be made to the judge presiding for the term of the court.

If there are questions, other than request for excusal which cannot be answered by the recorded message, please contact the Clerk’s Office at (850) 973-1500 between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday.

Payment for Jury Service

If you will receive regular pay from your employer during jury service, you are not entitled to compensation for the first three days of jury service. If you will not receive regular pay, you are entitled to receive $15 per day for the first three days of service. All jurors will receive $30 on the fourth day and each day thereafter. The Juror Compensation form included with your jury summons must be completed and turned into the Clerk when you report.

Juror parking is available in downtown Madison around or close to the Madison County Courthouse.
